But in the field of medicine in general and breast cancer treatment in particular, nothing stops still. This recent advance in early detection has the potential of not only saving the life of the patient but also means that treatments are less invasive, which further improves their quality of life.
The latest innovation in the field of breast cancer is the FDA-approved AI-assisted digital mammography Breast Tomosynthesis, an advanced form of breast imaging where multiple images of the breast are captured from different angles and are reconstructed into a 3D image set. A computer reconstructs these images into thin slices, allowing radiologists to “see through” overlapping tissues. Advantages include improved breast cancer detection, reduced false positive results, fewer biopsies, and the detection of small breast cancers that may have been hidden in the conventional mammogram.
